What is UI?

User Interface

TL;DR

UI (User Interface) is the visual part of a product that users interact with: buttons, menus, colors, typography, icons, and layout.

Example

UI is what you see and touch when using an app.

Open any app on your phone right now. Everything you see is the UI:

  • The colors and fonts
  • The buttons and their shapes
  • The icons in the navigation
  • The spacing between elements
  • The way a button changes when you tap it

Compare the UI of different banks' apps: Some feel modern and clean. Others feel cluttered and outdated. That's the difference good UI design makes.

UI design decisions:

  • Should this button be blue or green?
  • How big should this text be?
  • What icon best represents "settings"?
  • How much space should be between these elements?
  • What happens visually when you hover over this link?

Explanation

Elements of UI Design

Visual Hierarchy

The arrangement of elements to show importance. Bigger, bolder, and higher elements are seen as more important.

Color

Colors communicate meaning:

  • Red often means error or danger
  • Green often means success or go
  • Blue often conveys trust and professionalism

Typography

Font choices affect how content feels:

  • Serif fonts (like Times) feel traditional
  • Sans-serif fonts (like Arial) feel modern
  • Font size and weight create hierarchy

Spacing

The space between elements (white space) is as important as the elements themselves. Crowded designs feel overwhelming.

Components

Reusable UI elements:

  • Buttons
  • Input fields
  • Cards
  • Navigation menus
  • Modals/popups

Micro-interactions

Small animations that provide feedback:

  • A button that bounces when clicked
  • A loading spinner
  • A checkmark appearing after submission

Why It Matters

For Business Owners

First impressions are visual. Users judge your credibility in milliseconds based on how your site looks.

Consistency builds trust. A polished, consistent UI signals that you pay attention to details. Inconsistent UI makes you look unprofessional.

Good UI supports good UX. While UX is about how it works, UI helps users understand how to interact with your product.

UI vs. UX Again

Think of building a house:

  • UX is the floor plan: how you move through rooms, where things are placed for convenience
  • UI is the interior design: the paint colors, furniture style, light fixtures

Both matter. A beautiful house with a terrible floor plan is frustrating to live in. A perfectly functional house that's ugly isn't enjoyable either.
